Sourdough Bread

requires sourdough starter. I recently bought the Tartine cookbook because after visiting Paris and visiting Tartine in CA I want to make bread, more specifically baguettes. After a little research it seems that beginning bread makers should order their flours and bread starter from King Arthur Flour. It's a little chemistry-ish and you can make a bread starter from scratch but apparently this is a temperamental process and even if you order the starter it requires immediate care and needs to be fed with flour and activated before its used in bread.

The new Salvador Dali museum in St. Petersburg, FL is wonderful and includes a hedge maze! and wish tree! My favorite piece is the one above. I love that there's a tiny drawer in Venus's forehead with a white mink pompom.

Honeymoon Island State Park

My folks and I went to Honeymoon Island which is a very beautiful FL state park with beach and nature trails. In the 1940's it was incarnated by Life magazine as a place for honeymooners to go stay for a week in a thatched hut they won by lottery. See the "lovers nook" above and beach dotted with huts.

Cotton Mountain Church

Tonight my folks and I are going to Cotton Mountain Church in Wolfeboro, NH for a non denominational holiday church service without heat and lit by kerosene lanterns and elaborate chandelier. Services are held four times a year: Easter Sunrise Service, Old Home Sunday on the third Sunday of August, Vesper Services in October, and Christmas services usually on the fourth Sunday of December.

Southern NH ashtanga yoga

As far as I can tell the studios that currently offer mysore ashtanga yoga or ashtanga based courses are Earth and Sky yoga in Wolfeboro, East West Yoga and Portsmouth Yoga Shala in Portsmouth, NH and Studio 72 in Portland, ME. So far, I have only visited Earth and Sky which offers an abbreviated but challenging ashtanga inspired 1 hour 15 minute class. The picture above is from the studio and it's surrounded by water on two sides.

I have been to Momofuku milk bar 2x and Momofuku restaurant 2x. I love the restaurant but so far the milk bar seems silly. The cookie and the pie taste exactly the same and both capitalize on the supersweet!!!/salty combo not to be confused with the sweet/salty combo, a personal favorite. They also sell crazy ice cream flavors like cereal milk and sour something or other. I want to like it. I want to understand it.

Sometimes in Alfred we have to make our own fun and lately Steph and I have been locating and talking about the best Christmas lights that define space. Maybe its because we're teaching color theory together next semester which is also about defining space but with color. People around here are really into lights since its dark and cold and lights are bright and warm. There is also lots of space to put the lights and much nature to drape them over. Today I'm going to install some lights of my own but I'm going strictly with the big colorful variety. The above photo is from Japan however there is one house in Alfred that has the most beautiful blue and green lights that are strung deep into the woods.

Little Stray Black Cat with only one eye is getting an early Christmas present. I don't know yet if Little Stray Black Cat is a stray or really a Little Ferile Black Cat. There is actually a difference between the two...a stray is a house cat let go and a ferile cat is 100% wild every day all the time. A stray cat is easier to tame. Ideally I'd like to get Little Stray Black Cat's eye looked at by a free vet. This is my goal.

The big news around here is: I've been feeding a Little Stray Black Cat aka.LSBC not to be confused with Frosti, Big, Non-stray, Black&white Cat. LSBC just settled in for the night in Frosti's old bed on my porch. He might be missing one eye and the other problem is yesterday he was accompanied by another tabby cat! I do not want to attract a colony of wild cats.
Secondly, my enormous jug of cider has gone fizzy and maybe alcoholic? it's delicious.
Thirdly, tonight I went to the Ole Jensen lecture at school and it was great. I like how his work is involved with the everyday. As he described it, this particular carpet design has some areas with longer shag that are "extra cozy".

This weekend I'm working on updating my web site and job applications. It's every bit the opposite of fun. I will also attempt to bind a book out of a cake box(example pictured above) to show my class next week. You can also use a pasta box with a window. Last week my YMCA kids class made painted and stamped covers and then I used stab binding to make these little sketch books for each student. Today in class I gave them the books and piled up a mound of Halloween candy and told them to draw it in the wrapper, then out of the wrapper and then they could eat it. Needless to say, this assignment went over really well and the kids did some amazing drawings in their books that included personified candy corns-pictures to come.

The honors course I proposed for next semester, Get Crafty! got approved and students signed up. It's going to be about designing a craft project that's completed over the semester and then we'll have a group show at the end of the course. We will also visit some local crafts people's studios(Matt Metz I hope), visit a craft fair and talk about etsy and craft vs. art and craft arts. Hard to know what to write about on 9/11. It always feels so sad. Above you see twin kettles sort of. The kettle I got at SalVal(a knockoff) and the real deal-Michael Lax for Copco(bottom image). I love this kettle because we had one just like it when I was a kid. BTW, if you come upon one of these types of kettles there is a great reference about cleaning them here. Oft times they are rusty and have lime deposits. As you can see I have yet to clean the lime off mine. All it takes is Lime-A-way. The Michael Lax kettles come in beautiful colors like bright bright yellow, bright red, and chocolate brown.

There is an alpaca farm down the street from me in Alfred Station called East Valley Alpacas and they sell the most beautiful rugs. These rugs come in a few different striped and color block patterns and are woven in Texas although made from the wool in Alfred. They also make place mats, table runners and individual stair rugs.

My friend Becky let me c'mover and pick her garden today. We got swiss chard, tiger beans, low acid tomatoes(there were more but I ate em), cukes and basil. People in the area are heavy into their gardens. They cut down entire trees to provide sun and avoid going away due to the all mighty garden. It's serious business. I also had the pleasure of seeing Becky's husband's red and white 2 tone, convertible, 74' blazer in the garage. It's waiting for a few minor adjustments and I think if Alfred had a signature car it might be that car.

Had the best time in NH. Eating, drinking, swimming, antiquing, playing dominos and having laughs. I learned some things about my late grandfather on my Dad's side which made infinite sense.

There is now the most delicious bread and pizza under one roof at When Pigs Fly in York, ME. Pigs Fly Pizza just opened June 23rd and they serve pizzas and salads made with the freshest ingredients. Next door is the company store filled with about 20 kinds of bread and we chose the Mango, Pineapple, Raisin with Toasted Sesame and Ginger. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in Maine(since its open year round) or just buy some bread on-line. Really unique flavors...what you see above is veggie potato latke.

Willys Jeep restoration

We got some Willys jeep restoration going on up in our house. I kept asking my Dad how fast the jeeps could go and if we could ever take them out on the highway and it seems we can but they can only go about 60mph, will have antique plates and are still liable to break more frequently than a new car. A restored jeep is mostly for going down the street to the grocery store or driving around on some land. The windshield wiper system is awesome-the one on the driver's side is electric and the one on the passenger's side is manual. Wipe your own windshield People!

Yoga the Hornell YMCA

Tonight Lily and I went to yoga at the new YMCA in Hornell. It was really fun and the yoga room is gorgeous. I am teaching a couple art classes there including watercolor and drawing. The facility just opened on July 11th and it's wonderful and very fresh.

I have a lot of problems with it #1 being that backward paintings seem so trendy but I'll be positive and say that I DO like is how the back side of the red paper looks pink. At the YMCA I asked the students to write the strengths and weaknesses of their drawings on the back. I'm looking forward to seeing what they wrote.

Almond is not that different than Paris. There are inexpensive flowers and good food. I'm about to pick up a Weber "smokey joe" grill at Lowes so I can take advantage of grilling the free range meats that are locally available. In the summer here you can get loads of fresh vegetables and even raw milk for a fraction of the cost of grocery store prices like a dozen organic eggs for $1.

I made it back to Almond and it was easy and not easy. When I arrived at the airport on Monday my flight was canceled due to a strike so I ended up flying to Montreal Canada and then back to NYC. The best part was I got to fly business class! and I got a free meal voucher for the airport and free checked extra bags which I majorly needed. Then I went from LGA to Brooklyn, stayed overnight, went to JFK and flew to Rochester and got driven home by a stranger who is now my friend. Watching French movies, eating cheese and drinking port is my idea of flying.

underground lattice passage leads from one garden to the lily ponds

Giverny is intensely beautiful. It is where Monet lived, had his gardens and painted his water lily paintings. The Giverny gardens are how I imagine paradise to be. I rented a bike and rode 3 miles on the countryside bike path to get there and it looked a lot like Almond, NY.

This evening I went on the wonderwheel aka the Roue de Paris and it was the best! I thought it was going to be scary but it was non scary because I'm convinced this is the fanciest most resolved ferris in the world. It is white, clean and the cars are enclosed with glass. It feels more like a gondola because the it's a smooth ride and goes up so high revealing beautiful views of the city. The Roue de Paris just opened today and it's located at the "fun fair" in Tuileries.
